The Best Countries to Live on €1,500/Month in 2026 (Ranked by Data)
€1,500 a month is poverty-line money in Zurich and a comfortable middle-class life in half the world. We filtered the 103 countries in our database by affordability, then re-ranked the cheap ones by what actually makes them livable: safety, healthcare and how hard it is to legally stay. Here are the ten that came out on top.
How we ranked them
Every country in our dataset gets scored 0–100 across 16 factors. For this ranking we required an affordability score of 70+ (meaning a solo person can realistically live on ~€1,500/month including rent), then weighted safety (Global Peace Index 2025), healthcare quality and immigration friendliness — because a cheap country you can't legally stay in, or wouldn't feel safe in, isn't a real option.
Budgets below assume a solo person, one-bedroom apartment outside the most touristy zones, cooking plus regular eating out. Couples typically add 40–60%, not 100%.
#1 🇹🇭 Thailand
Why it wins: no other country combines this price level with this healthcare quality. Chiang Mai remains the benchmark: €400–550 for a modern one-bedroom, €2–4 street meals, world-class hospitals in Bangkok. €1,500 covers a genuinely comfortable life with weekend trips included. Watch out for: visa runs are tiresome unless you qualify for the 5-year LTR visa or the Destination Thailand Visa; burning season (Feb–Apr) in the north is real.
#2 🇻🇳 Vietnam
Why: the cheapest country in our top tier. Da Nang gives you beach, mountains and fibre internet for €350–500 rent; a full comfortable month runs €1,000–1,300, leaving savings margin on €1,500. Food might be the best value on Earth. Watch out for: no proper long-stay visa for remote workers yet — most people cycle 90-day e-visas. Healthcare is fine for basics; for anything serious you fly to Bangkok.
#3 🇲🇽 Mexico
Why: the easiest residency in this list — the Temporary Resident Visa is straightforward if you can show savings or steady income, and it lasts up to 4 years. Skip pricey CDMX/Tulum: Mérida (one of the safest cities in the Americas), Oaxaca or Guadalajara deliver rich city life on €1,300–1,500. Watch out for: safety varies enormously by region — research at state level, not country level.
#4 🇬🇪 Georgia
Why: most nationalities get 365 days visa-free — no paperwork, just arrive. Tbilisi is Europe-adjacent, walkable and full of character; €450–600 rents, €1,200–1,400 total budgets. The 1% small-business tax regime (for those who register) is famously attractive. Watch out for: political situation has been tense; healthcare is adequate but below EU standards.
#5 🇧🇬 Bulgaria
Why: the cheapest life inside the EU. Sofia and Plovdiv run €600–800 rents; €1,400–1,500 buys a full month including skiing (Bansko) or beach (Varna) weekends. EU citizens can simply move; 10% flat income tax tempts freelancers. Watch out for: non-EU citizens have limited easy routes; winters are grey; bureaucracy is old-school.

Why: Kuala Lumpur is the most underrated value in Asia — luxury condos with pools for €500–700, excellent private healthcare, near-universal English, and the DE Rantau nomad visa is one of Asia's few real ones. €1,500 lives very well here. Watch out for: KL is car-centric; outside the capital and Penang, expat scenes thin out fast.

Why: Medellín's spring-all-year climate and buzzing nomad scene on €1,200–1,500 budgets, plus a proper digital nomad visa with a low income bar. Healthcare in big cities ranks among Latin America's best. Watch out for: street crime requires city smarts ("no dar papaya"); Spanish is close to mandatory for daily life.

Why: the Mediterranean without Mediterranean prices — Riviera beaches that rival Greece, €400–600 rents in Tirana or Sarandë, and US citizens get a full visa-free year. €1,300 is comfortable. Watch out for: healthcare is the weakest on this list (many expats use private clinics or hop to Italy/Greece); infrastructure outside cities is rough.

Why: Cuenca is a long-standing budget-expat capital for a reason: colonial charm, spring climate, US-dollar economy and full months on €1,100–1,400. Residency visas are attainable with modest income proof. Watch out for: security has deteriorated in coastal cities since 2023 — stick to the highlands (Cuenca, Quito's safe districts, Loja).
#10 🇦🇷 Argentina
Why: Buenos Aires offers the most European big-city life on this list — cafés, theatre, food — and the second-best healthcare. For euro earners it remains good value. Watch out for: the economy is a rollercoaster; prices in euro terms have swung wildly year to year. Budget €1,500 today, but build in slack.
